In 2023, the Young Women in Democracy Forum (YWDF) celebrated a proud moment as its Communications Officer, Regina Gborie , was selected to join the highly competitive Emerging Leaders Program at the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center West Africa – Accra .

Regina’s selection is a remarkable achievement—not only for her personally, but also for YWDF and for young women across Sierra Leone who are striving to make their mark in leadership and public service. Out of over 7,800 applicants , she was among just 100 outstanding young leaders chosen to participate in Cohort 46 , representing Sierra Leone with pride, passion, and purpose.
The YALI program , a flagship initiative of the United States Government , is designed to invest in the next generation of African leaders by equipping them with the skills, tools, and networks needed to drive positive change across the continent. From November 27 to December 15, 2023 , Regina took part in an intensive on-site training program in Accra, Ghana , where she engaged in dynamic leadership modules, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and mentorship opportunities that further honed her advocacy and communication expertise.
Throughout the program, Regina stood out not only for her dedication to community development, but also for her unwavering belief in the power of youth and women’s leadership. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I believe change is possible in our continent, and I’m committed to being part of the solution.”
Her success is a powerful testament to the growing influence of young women in leadership spaces in Sierra Leone and beyond. It also highlights YWDF’s ongoing commitment to nurturing capable, confident, and visionary female leaders who are ready to step into roles of impact and responsibility.
As Regina returns home with fresh insights and renewed energy, she brings with her not only knowledge, but hope—proof that when young women are empowered, supported, and given platforms to grow, they can—and will—transform communities, institutions, and nations.
Believe in Africa. Work your talk. And lead with courage.
